Third Regional Convention
SRM University, Chennai-30th July 2012


Third convention held at Chennai on 30th July made a distinctive mark. Tamilnadu has 25 percent of Eastern Ghats with hill ranges like Shevroys, Pachamalai etc. In the south they meet with Western Ghats at Nilgiris. Keeping in view of the significance of the state in terms of conservation of these ranges, a convention was planned in Tamil Nadu to spread the concern and to invigorate peoples participation in protecting the Ghats. The event took place on 30th July 2012 in SRM University, Chennai with cordial support and participation from different spheres.

Inaugural of the Programme :

His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Dr. K, Rosaiah inaugurated the programme. The session was presided over by Dr. Pachamuthu, Chancellor and founder of SRM University. GrACE Chairman Sri. R. Dileep Reddy gave a welcome address. The other dignitaries on the dias were Sri. C V Shankar, Principal Secretary, MoEF, Govt. Tamil Nadu and Dr.M.Ponnavaikko, Vice-Chancellor of SRM University.

His Excellency Governor blessed the initiative. Sri CV Shankar has mentioned on the TN Govt initiatives to protect biodiversity and ecosystems. Sri. Pachamuthu emphasized the importance of ecological balance. Sri Dileep Reddy in his address encapsulated the purpose and way forward of the initiative. He said that after organizing regional conventions, a charter on Eastern Ghats would be presented to the global heads in Hyderabad, where they are meeting for COP 11, Biodiversity convention.

Technical Session

The session presided by Dr.W.Richard Thilagaraj, Asst. Professor, Biotechnology, SRM University. On behalf of SRM University he made a small and beautiful power point visual and it was captivating.

Smt.K Leela Reddy, Patron of GrACE and President of CGR has made a metaphor of Nature to Universal Mother. She pressed upon the imminent need to save Mother Earth as today's scenario is as if we are selling our mother for material and economic comforts.

Prof. K.Purushotham Reddy, Eminent Environmentalist has made a vivid presentation of emerging global environmental crisis and urged for each individual to take part in saving nature legacy. He elicited the prominence of hills by saying that the hills are the medical store for local tribals.

Sri J.Bapu Reddy,IAS, (Retd), Prinicpal Advisor, CGR, Eminent writer has made his concern in poetic wave that how eternal the earth us and how important nature to human survival.

Sri Subhamoy Maitra, Cluster EHS Incharge, L&T, IDPL made us think on our acts and facts human impression on resources. He briefly mentioned on ecological foot print of our deeds and needs giving example of a cup of tea's water footprint to be 140 litres of water.

Prof.B.Ravi Prasad Rao, Member, Indian Subcontinent Plant Specialist Group, IUCN in his presentation given the glimpses of floral wealth and vulnerability of genepool in Eastern Ghats. It is learnt through endemic species such as Cycas beddomi and others are still in good number and needs protection. Subtle observations and persistent research may elucidate the unknown species of the region. He coined the Easternghats as Warm Spot in terms of biodiversity.

Dr. K. Tulasi Rao presented on Nallamalai Ranges and its ecological prominence. He shared on some of the community based eco initiatives took place in the tiger reserve.

Green songs by Sri Lenin Babu, from Anantapur got wide applauses from audience.

The programme is participated by academicians, scholars, NGOs, media and others from Chennai city apart from SRM students.

CPR Environmental Education centre, Andhra Social and Cultural Association, Several Individuals name to name in their capacity have took part in making the event a success.
